Benedict James Galea - His Legacy

The story of the Australian Buff Company starts with the arrival of the Galea Family, Mary and Ben with three of their children from Malta to Australia in 1949.  To say it was a successful move is an understatement. He was a strong, determined, hard working man of character.

He held quite a few part-time jobs, one of which was at a polishing buff manufacturing factory. Ben was offered full time work.

From 1959

Ben went into a business partnership and it was decided to build a factory in the rear of the family home at 10 Pau Street, North Coburg, and hence Australian Buff Company was born. After some time, Ben was able to purchase the partner’s share of the business and hence, his dream of owning his own business was realised. He ran this small, family business from a backyard factory making polishing buffs for general industry.

Since then it expanded, taking over the family home and now there is a brand new factory on the block next door that brings it up to today’s high standards of working environment. The business has been highly successful. Over a long period of time there has been setbacks, one in particular was when the Ford Motor Company changed their metal bumpers to plastic bumpers, that was a big part of their business gone but they rebuilt and they’ve managed to compete against cheaper imports particularly from China and other low wage countries by the attention to detail and the quality of service they provide.

Sadly, Benedict died in 2005 leaving the business to his family who continue to honor his commitment by remaining a true Australian manufacturer priding itself on high quality products and unbeatable customer service.
